Cephalopoda - Ammonite Fossil Necklace
We're a teensy bit obsessed with fossils here at Penny Masquerade headquarters, so when we received these stunning genuine Ammonite fossil pendants, it's fair to say we were a tad excited!
Now sit down and pay attention, geology class is in session! Ammonites are an extinct group of marine molluscs from the Cephalopoda class and are most closely related to the Octopus, Squid and Cuttlefish. It's thought they died out in the Cretaceous period during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event - remember that asteroid that was thought to have killed off the dinosaurs? Well turns out it wiped these out too! In Medieval Europe, fossilised ammonites were thought to be petrified coiled snakes and were called "snakestones" or "serpentstones".
At 66 million years old (!!!) this is definitely the oldest piece we've brought to you to date! The ammonites are stunning. Their surfaces have been polished and they resemble shiny marble, the detail is outstanding and the history is incredible, making these necklaces a fantastic talking-piece.
Each Ammonite measures approximately 38x32mm but as they are natural fossils no two are the same, making each completely unique and individual. The pendants are hung from antiqued-silver tone stainless steel chain which is available in a variety of different lengths - simply select your option from the drop-down menu. Please note: Model wears 28" chain.
Cephalopoda will make its way to you in a white box with a gold-foil printed Penny Masquerade logo - perfect for gift-giving or keeping as a little present for yourself!
